Racing Against Tadej Pogacar: An Amateur's Perspective (2025)

Tadej Pogacar: The Ultimate Challenge for an Amateur Cyclist

Imagine receiving an invitation just three days before the men's World Championship road race, offering you the chance to cycle alongside a four-time Tour de France winner and the world's top cyclist. But there's a catch: you must conquer a 15km mountain climb with an average gradient of 7.6%, with sections exceeding 20%.

This was the thrilling experience I embarked on, joining hundreds of amateurs for a unique challenge. Despite my lack of recent road bike experience and limited preparation time, I was determined to give it my all.

On a crisp Sunday morning in Komenda, I stood at the start line alongside Tadej Pogacar, the world champion himself. The atmosphere was electric, with fellow cyclists sharing their goals. Some sought to avoid humiliation, while others aimed to push their limits. The Austrian duo, Sandra Burtscher and Michael Mangeng, stood out with their Pogi-endorsed white bikes, but they admitted to nerves and realistic expectations.

As the race began, Pogacar showcased his ruthless efficiency, effortlessly leaving us amateurs in his wake. I, on the other hand, struggled with the steep climb, despite my previous cycling adventures and recent focus on Strava segments. My preparation was limited, and my friend, Mark Koghee, warned me of the potential stupidity of my endeavor.

However, I was determined to give it my best. I borrowed a drop-bar bike from Marin Medak and sought advice on climbing techniques. While an electric engine was not an option, I pushed through, reaching the summit 53 minutes after Pogacar. But I wasn't alone in my challenge.

Andrew Feather, a 40-year-old lawyer from Bath, impressed everyone by finishing ahead of Pogacar. He shared his strategy, emphasizing the importance of setting a high tempo and soloing to the top. Feather's achievement was remarkable, as he is one of the few riders to finish ahead of Pogacar this year.

Despite his dominance, Pogacar remained humble, acknowledging that he couldn't win every race. Even after a spectacular season, including four Tour de France victories, world and European titles, and three 'monument' one-day race wins, he expressed his eagerness to continue.

"If you love what you do, motivation shouldn't be difficult," he said. "I'm open to new challenges and experiences."
